Changes to vaccination policy
2021-10-09
Information for families including changes to vaccination policy, and updates on game schedules and tournaments.
There are several important updates regarding the 2021-2022 season. Please read the following carefully.
Vaccination
There has been an important change to vaccination status for players and team volunteers following an updated decision by the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association (OWHA), which governs female hockey in Ontario.
Effective immediately, it is mandatory, as a condition of eligibility to participate in any OWHA-sanctioned activity, that everyone born in 2009 and earlier must be fully vaccinated (2 shots plus 14 days) as soon as possible and by no later than November 1, 2021. This includes all players, staff and volunteers, including coaches, trainers and officials. Only those with a documented medical exemption will be permitted to play without being fully vaccinated. This vaccination policy applies to players in U18, U 15 and U 13, and any team volunteers (managers, trainers, coaches, assistant coaches, COVID-19 screeners).
This change in policy is now in alignment with the Ontario Minor Hockey Association.
The OWHA and Frontenac Arena vaccination policies remain unchanged for spectators: All spectators born in 2009 or earlier, unless exempted must provide proof of identification and vaccination (or proof of being entitled to another exemption). This includes all parents and guardians of players, and all youth spectators aged 12 to 17 years of age.
Teams will begin verifying vaccination status for eligible players and team volunteers between October 10 and 17, 2021. Eligible players and team volunteers will show proof of vaccination but will not be required to submit a copy. Teams will record that proof has been shown and a participant has met the OWHA vaccination policy. Once an Affected Person’s vaccination status has been verified and it is determined that there is no further need for retention of such records, they will be destroyed in a secure manner.
If you have questions about how to obtain a copy of your vaccination receipt, visit the COVID-19 vaccination provincial portal or call the Provincial Vaccine Booking Line at 1-833-943-3900.
Any player who chooses not to continue the season because of their vaccination status, will be granted a full refund minus a small processing fee of $50.
We thank you for your patience and understanding as our executive and team volunteers implement this change in policy.
Team Volunteers (Bench Staff)
The executive would like to extend its thanks to all parent and community volunteers who have stepped up to serve as coaches, assistants, trainers, managers and COVID screeners this season. All these positions are unpaid volunteer positions, and we appreciate the extra hours these folks put into supporting teams. Your team manager/coach will be in touch soon if they haven’t already about important season startup information and expectations.
Game schedules
While we still await final approval for game play from the OWHA, we have posted the current tentative game schedules to the website. Games are tentatively scheduled to begin October 23, 2021. Please review the website carefully for game date, times and locations.
Tournaments
We are hopeful that once the OWHA approves game play, we will be able to enter at least one, if not two, tournaments this season. We have tentatively registered our teams for a tournament in Gananoque in January. We are also gathering details for our usual season-ending tournament in Kanata in the spring. Normally, we build the cost of tournaments into registration fees. We did not do that this year given the uncertainty around travel. We will be reaching out soon regarding the additional costs and registration dates etc.
Again, thank you for your patience as we work through new expectations and routines to keep everyone safe, healthy and on the ice!
