Rowan's Law Requirements for Concussion

2019-09-09

Every player, parent (if individual under age 18), team official and on-ice Official must review Concussion Code of Conduct and Concussion Awareness Resources in order to play hockey.

The Ontario Government has adopted the Statute “Rowan’s Law” that includes mandatory requirements for all sport, including the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association (OWHA).

Rowan’s Law makes it mandatory for sports organizations to ensure that parents of athletes under 18, coaches, team trainers and officials confirm every year that they have reviewed Ontario's Concussion Awareness Resources.
The intent of Rowan’s Law is to ensure:
  • Increased education and awareness for parents, coaches, athletes, and teachers surrounding concussion injuries;
  • Better tools for coaches and trainers to identify concussions;
  • Concussion policies in place at all school boards and sports associations across Ontario; and
  • Increased education and training for healthcare professionals to better treat and manage concussions.
As a result, after July 1, 2019 every player (parent if individual under age 18), team official and on-ice Official must review the OHF Concussion Code of Conduct and the appropriate Concussion Awareness Resources in order to participate.

Parents/guardians can review the OWHA Concussion Awareness Resource here.
Applicable age appropriate Concussion Awareness Resources are also available:
10 and Under Concussion Awareness Resource
11-14 Concussion Awareness Resource
15 and Over Concussion Awareness Resource

Parents/guardians will be asked to sign a copy of the OWHA Rowan’s Law Acknowledgement Form at your first practice for the 2019-2020 season and as part of the registration process going forward.
